    which is best island to, and cheapest? which island is most calm and laid back?

      I would head to the Big Island (Hawaii)….but look for property on the windward side north of Hilo. That gets you off the active volcanoes (hey – I am a volcanologist by training), but keeps you on the side with plenty of rainfall. The leeward side (Kona) is way too dry for me! 🙂
