Budgeting for Homesteaders

This course helps you to build a working budget using spreadsheet templates.  At the end you will have budging skills and tools to help you be in control of your finances.

Whether you are just planning to move into homesteading, have started or even an old hand, this course can help you.

This course will take you through the process of how to create a personal budget so that you can be in better control of your finances.  You will use your real situation, so at the end of the course you will have a working document that you can use well into the future.

I will assume you have all the facts and figures at your fingertips (or know how to get them) and that you have very little experience with building a personal budget.  If you feel you have more experience, then you can skip forward lessons (you can always come back).

Please note that this course is for building a personal budget.  If you want to build a budget for a business, you must seek the assistance of an accountant.


To build a working personal budget you can just use paper, pencil and an eraser.  However you will be doing a lot of repeat mathematics each and every month which will become so laborious you will give up!

And so I recommend that you use a spreadsheet program to do your budget.  If you are not a person who uses spreadsheets then don’t worry.  I have created templates that you can use by just filling in the blanks and a basic guide on how to access the information.  All the math is done for you!   I will even guide you so you don’t get lost in the spreadsheet templates.

If you are familiar to using spreadsheets you can adjust/alter and upgrade the templates if you feel you want them to do more.

During this course I will provide templates for you to use in any of the following programs:

  • Microsoft Excel
  • Apple Numbers
  • Apache OpenOffice Calc

The first two of these are programs that will either come installed on your computer, or you need to buy then separately.   

Apache OpenOffice however is a FREE download platform and a great alternative .  You can download it here (http://www.openoffice.org/download/)

What will you need?

So to undertake this course you should have one of these programs ready to use as well as details about your income and expenses.  A pad of paper and pen will be handy too….and a willingness to learn!

Undertaking this course does not mean that you should not seek financial advice from experts in the field (tax experts, retirement experts, accountant and financial advisors) – but it will give you the power to build your own budget using their advice.
